RETIREMENT PLANNER CHECKLIST

The checklist below was devised to give you some indication of how you are progressing with your retirement planning.

FUTURE

1. I have discussed my retirement with my partner, family, friends and employer.

2. I have all my personal records (Will, Birth Certificate, Insurance Policies, Savings Accounts, Investment Certificates, etc).

3. My partner and I have developed a 'Lifeplan' - the things we would like to achieve before we die.

FINANCIAL

4. I have developed a retirement budget for living and other expenses, planned trips, etc.

5. I have a complete list of assets, liabilities and income sources and where documents are kept.

6. If appropriate - I have contacted Centrelink to check that their records match mine. I have an estimate of my Social Security entitlements.

7. I have obtained an estimate of my superannuation pension/lump sum entitlements and other termination pay including annual and long service leave.

8. I have obtained a detailed financial plan from a qualified Financial Planner which takes into account all of my financial needs and resources, makes necessary investment recommendations regarding my future financial position and makes recommendations regarding the future monitoring and management of my financial and investment position.

LEGAL

9. I have considered my estate to minimise taxation and maximise simplicity and convenience for my beneficiaries.

10. I have a current will which ensures my estate will be distributed according to my wishes in the event of my death. The executor is alive and competent and knows where the relevant documents are kept, who my advisers are and knows they can call upon their services. Note: If a public trustee is to act as executor, be sure you are aware of the costs involved.

11. I have considered the appointment of an Enduring Power of Attorney to my partner/child/etc, to ensure my affairs can be handled should I become mentally or physically incapable, or if I am interstate or overseas.

HOUSING

12. I have considered my housing needs for now and in the future, including some investigation of retirement communities and alternatives to my existing house (smaller home, apartment, etc)

13. I have considered other accommodation issues including:- proximity to medical assistance, availability of public transport, living with my children, security, ease of maintenance, safety if I become less mobile, if appropriate, the possibility of trading down or pre-selling if I am asset rich but cash flow poor.

HEALTH

14. I have had a recent and complete check-up.

15. I participate in a regular exercise program.

16. I have a doctor who has a complete record of my health history.

17. I have considered alternative health insurance to supplement Medicare.

LIFESTYLE

18. My partner and I have considered the amount of spare time we will have together in retirement and have thought about how to use it.

19. I have looked at my present hobbies, sports and interests and determined what I will continue in retirement.

20. I have explored new spare time activities and started experimenting with some.

EFFECT

21. I have considered how my retirement may affect my relationship with my partner.

22. I have examined the needs I have which are currently fulfilled by my job, (challenge, social, self worth, achievement, mental and physical stimulation etc.) and considered how these needs will be met in retirement.

76 - 100 Well done! You have most of the important aspects of retirement in place. Whilst you may have some minor things to settle, you are ready to pursue the adventures and opportunities retirement will offer. Plans do not have to be set in concrete, they can change.
51 - 75 Yes - you have been doing something about your retirement plans, but you are not quite ready yet. Seek professional help, which may include a Solicitor, Doctor, and Financial Planner. Remember the personal, emotional and life planning aspects of your retirement are as critical as the financial aspects.
